So let's uh keep going so before we jump into the heart of the program. I wanted to make sure everybody is sort of clear of the purpose of Tonight's session, so some things that we will not cover will the information about the Masters degrees. We won't be talking about the differences between the PhD in the EDLD programs. We won't be going over the structure of their format or the curriculum or the funding for their degrees or student experience instead.

So what will we talk about so tonight. We're going to talk very specifically about the application and the application process and the materials that you will need to submit in order to be considered for either of the two doctoral programs so before we jump into the requirements. I wanted to talk 1st about how we review your application. The most important thing to remember is that we use holistic review.

And the best way to describe holistic review is that there is no set formula that we use to determine whether or not you are admitted to our program In other words, there is no set. This GPA times. This GRE equals an automatic yes or no. Instead we truly, truly take into account your individual.

Hello from the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Nation in Washington State!
So let's take the individual components and 1st will talk about the statement of purpose. So the statement of purpose is considered a writing sample and the committee will pay attention to not only the content, but the strength of your writing and remember that the length of your statement depends on the program to which you're applying so for PhD applicants. There is a one thousand word limit.
Annie Paul
06:07:38 PM
Hello from New Haven, Connecticut!
Grass for the EDLT applicants. You have a 1500 word limit and remember that there is no set standard format that we require so it is up to you in terms of how you how you format. Your particular statement and a question that we often get is whether or not citations are required in the answer is no you are not required to use citations. You can if you wish but you're certainly not required.
We are not expecting an academic paper.
So let's first talk about the PhD in education statement of purpose. Certainly, an important component of the application and the faculty committee they're interested in.

Getting a sense of the quality of thinking that is presented in your statement of purpose, something to note is that this is not a research proposal, so you do not have to submit a detailed sense of the topic that you're researching or a detailed outline of the of the methods that you'll use or their populations that you're interested in looking into that is not the purpose of what you are submitting instead.

On the opposite end you don't want your research interest to be so broad and so vague as to be essentially meaningless as an example. You shouldn't say that your research interest is how best to close the achievement gap. A worthy endeavor, perhaps but too broad for purposes of a PhD statement of purpose. It's a balance right. It's a balance of helping the committee understand how where your research interests. How do you start?
Going about asking the kinds of questions that interest you but you don't have to have your exact research dissertation topic already committed to that's not what they're looking for.

Sometimes, when a student has multiple areas of interest, instead of a single area. How it can be introduced in the essay? Khem
Include the names of faculty of whom you are interested in working with you are not required to do so. So if there is overlap with some of the faculty in your research interests and their expertise as great you can mention them. But you do not have to for the PhD in education. It is not required that you secure an advisor before submitting an application In other words, it is not required for you to have contacted faculty before putting an application so it is.
Veronica Torres

Hello from Dublin
OK, if you have not contact not contacted faculty beforehand. And so, if the only place that you list. A faculty member is in the application itself. That is completely fine. The committee will do the work of matching accepted students with professor best able to support their research interests. So the committee will do that work. We're not expecting applicants to do that and just a final reminder again.
You want to address all those topics within a one thousand word limit so often. I get the question of Well, you know my.
Russell Williams
06:11:19 PM
Hello. Russell Williams.
My statement is currently you know 1200 words is that OK. We ask that you really, and truly adhere to the one thousand word limits so that we are evaluating applications that are equitable right so that is part of the exercises to keep within the one thousand word limit right so now we're going to turn to Zachary. Our current PhD students an ask him to talk about his experience about preparing and writing his statement of purpose.
Qiyang Zhang

Good afternoon from Barrow, Alaska! I am interested in the EdLD!
Right I think definitely the statement of purpose is the thing that you will probably be spending most of your time on I think it's also valuable to go through the online application to look at what kinds of information will be asked of you already 'cause you don't want to repeat yourself. Like obviously some things will be repeated like your name probably not, but you don't want 1000 words is very, very short, so you don't want to waste any of that space on something that.
Can already be seen from the online application itself?
And something that people always say which I definitely agree is that you want to get as much feedback as possible from different kinds of people are there any questions?
Harriet Sturkey
06:12:38 PM
Lost Sound
Yeah, so how did you so exactly uhm? How did you go about starting?
Writing I think for me personally, I came.
I I look to apply to the program with the question in mind, so that to me. That was something that was more straightforward for me. I know there are some people in my program who don't have that clear research questions, Anne in which case.
Jacob Coronel
06:13:16 PM

06:13:29 PM
Hello from Senegal
You do have to make sure to really spend a lot of time, Introspecting and finding out what motivates you 'cause that's what the committee members want to see in terms of deciding whether or not you'll be. You'll be able to succeed in the program. I don't. I don't think that the committee members are looking at it in terms of like can, we find the best people right. It's just like who are the people who we think will will succeed in this program so to give them the information they need.

Hello from New York City; interested in EdLD.
334 months I did spend quite a bit of time because I I wrote like 5 drafts like I I wrote it, like a couple of times 'cause I.
Santi Pulido Gomez
06:14:12 PM
How did you strike the balance in the specificity of that research question/area of interest?
Got some people treated some people say this incoherent. Some people said like Oh, you know this sounds great. But like not convincing so I did spend quite a bit of time on that.
Yeah, but uh I'm not sure if that's definitely not absolutely necessary, but I personally did spend quite a bit of time on it was there, something about writing your statement of purpose that you wish you had known.
Derek Rinks
06:14:37 PM
Echo Nicole Sochaczevski's questions!
Years ago, if you had to give advice to your own self.
I can't think of anything at the moment I think one thing I really appreciate about this application processes. That is very transparent and there's a lot of information. I don't think that there was there was anything that I felt that I could have known I think the Admissions Committee and the admissions. People do a very good job of making sure that everything you do need to know is more or less there.
Great alright so then we'll move on to the EDLT statement of purpose.
Iniobong Odejimi
06:15:36 PM
what are the step by step practical ways of encouraging Phd graduates students to attain success.
So we're going to talk a little bit about the DOD statement of purpose, and what needs to be included as part of this as you mention that is 1500 words in length. So again you have a little bit more room than the PhD but it's still not a ton of space. You still need to think critically about what you want to include and how to make best use of your space here so there are some specific topics again that you want to address 1 being what key experiences have contributed to your commitment to education and then we're also going to ask that you think critically about what you've used your most significant professional accomplishment.

06:16:14 PM
Question for Zachary (PhD): you mentioned we should not repeat stuff that is already in your application. I have a dilemma here about my previous research - in undergrad. In the application form I already described it, but then in my SOP I feel it is relevant in showing how I formulate questions and how my current research interests naturally evolved from my earlier research... so... how much do I rehash?
Andrew significant professional failure to date and how do they inform your developments again kind of this little bit of self reflection boat in there and thinking about kind of what in your background brought you to the point where you're applying to this program will also want you to talk about your plans and so kind of what issues would you like to tackle in your career as a system level leader in education? How do you envision yourself affecting significant change in the American US pre K through 12 education sector so again kind of getting at your fit with the program. How do you envision?
Youlim Yai
06:16:25 PM
@Nicole, 25 PhD students join us each fall.
The program being part of your next steps and taking you where you need to go to to do this type of work that you're looking to do.
Jenny Muniz Sicairos
06:16:45 PM
Can you concurrently pursue a Master's and a doctorate by having the Master's degree awarded en in passing?
There is no particular format that is required or expected for the DOD statement of purpose. And so you can either answer. Each question discreetly so it's kind of like looking at them individually or you can kind of incorporate them within a single narrative. So you can again kind of a person. Either way, whatever kind of feels most natural to your writing style again. This is your voice in the applications. It's your chance to kind of talk to the admissions committee directly so you want to make sure you're going to do it feels natural to you.
Youlim Yai
06:17:09 PM
@Nicole, the number of students who come directly from undergrad varies. In some years none, in some years a few. It depends on the strength of the applicants within the overall pool

Niki Sochaczevski
06:17:24 PM
thank you!
And then In addition to the statement of purpose for the DOD. There is a 500 word short essay that is also required. It is a short essay so you want to look at the application instructions for more details about what we're looking for there. But we're essentially asking you to think about what strategies you might apply to the USA Pre Pre K through 12 education system. Excuse me strategy from outside of that system again read those instructions carefully so before you start writing.
And you feel like you have a good sense of what the question is asking and give yourself some time to think about that, so that I'm going to turn it over to our current unity. Student just to be here to talk a little bit about your experience with writing the DLV statement of purpose, so again any thoughts about how you approached it. How you got started writing it any tips that you might have for our perspective students here.

Is there anywhere we can get advice as to the viability of our area of interest as a research topic?
Yes, so I am in full transparency. I got started a little bit later in the process. Then I would recommend because I was trying to decide if I was going to do YDOD or applies when MBA program so angered on EDLD and so I probably had maybe like a I don't know maybe like a two month run away to do everything and so it was very time constraints, so I would I would give myself more time about what if I were to do it again. But when I when I got started was thinking about.
I spent a lot of time thinking about what were true failures and so um? I thought about I did like some brainstorming about figures that I experience and what I realized was a lot of the failures that I talked about were like other people, failing and I was like there with them and I sent it to a friend of mine who also did EOD issues like this is not your failure like you're talking about someone else and so.
I think when I wanted to make sure I did my statement of purpose was.
Anchor anchor on vulnerability and say like yeah. I really did miss that. But here's what I learned and I think that that.

This is very helpful Jessica, thank you
Elated really well in the second purpose. I think the other thing that I wanted to be sure that I did was show the scope of my experience so I've been working you know prior to the program. I have been working for about 10 years and so I want it to show the committee. The scope of my experience from a teacher. A teacher coach someone working in philanthropy and how all of those things work together to prepare me for the program as a?
As a qualified candidate, then obviously for the work that I want to do after the program that was really important to me.

Sorry I meant GMAT instead of the GRE? What scores are you looking for in the application?
And then I think I also spent a lot of time thinking about making sure it was well written as I wanted it to be an enjoyable read like I wanted it to be like you know, I wanted to be able to tell a story about the work that I had been doing because it meant so much to me and I want it. The Committee to leave my segment purpose feeling like I have a better sense of who she is. I want to meet her so that's great. Yeah, I did just 2 rounds of feedback so I think uhm again don't do what I did, but I think that I've broke my second purpose, probably over the course of maybe 2 weeks. I cranked it out and then got 2 rounds of feedback and then.

What concentration is most appropriate for those interested in researching educational policy affecting students with disabilities
Upload it that's great thank you. Yeah, that's kind of a good transition to some of our tips for this statement of purpose. The first time it is to start early and absolutely you can definitely put it together in 2 weeks and that definitely works for some people but the earlier you give yourself the more time you give yourself. Hopefully, that reduces your stress level and it allows you to put together something that you feel really good about in half and out. And lots of time for revision as both were students talk about demonstrate your fit with the program that is so important for both of these programs they?
Zachary Lim
06:21:08 PM
@Ksenia Filatov, One of the reasons why I had to rewrite my statement so many times is because many of the earlier drafts spent too much space on my previous research! In the end I did talk about my research, but only to the extent that is was relevant to the narrative I was trying to construct.
Think about the DOD at very specific focus on US. Pre K through 12 system and the PhD bringing your your research kind of area of interest so make sure that's demonstrated thing kind of Zachary touched on this a bit and saying Don't rehash a resume. We have your resume. We will definitely read it going to look at everything that you submit.
Ksenia Filatov

So again you can use it as a launching off point there might be certain experiences that you're interested in talking more about or certainly again. If you think about the DOD statement of purpose. If you're talking about your professional accomplishments and feelings. You'll definitely be pulling of those types of experiences, but you don't want to read like a narrative form of your resume don't focus on the prestige of Harvard University. That's not what the statement of purpose is about. That's not of interest to us. We want to get to know you.
That's what this is about the committee wants to know who you are beyond.

Zachary, my research area came from my personal life, those of other people I know. Is it okay if I talk about how I got to this point?
And these other points in your application so again make sure your voice is coming through an again revised revised and revised make sure that because it is a writing sample that you are treating it. As such as well so again give yourself plenty of time to do that. The only thing I would recommend and thinking about revision is to make sure your voice at the end of the day is still coming through loud and clear so if you give it to a lot of people to review my.
Start having your standard purpose kind of lose your voice in your vision in it. So definitely share it with other people, but take um take what they say a little bit with the greatest but just be very self, reflective and critical. Then the day to make sure that your statement of purpose is still reflective of you.
Alright so let's switch gears a little bit and talk about the 3 letters of recommendation so for both of these programs.
Um would you require that you upload that 3 letters of recommendation are uploaded to your statement to your application excuse me so as part of your application. You'll give us the information for these 3 recommenders and then the system will automatically send them out a email that will give them instructions on how to complete it.
Zachary Lim

So I'm thinking about your letters of recommendation. I believe GRE scores are good for 5 years
And ideally your letter should address both academic and professional abilities. If you have a faculty member of previous occurrence. One who can talk to these strengths that's wonderful you can certainly ask them but for people who have been out of school for quite a bit of time. That's not always an option. But in that case you can think about people in your life who can speak to those types of academic strengths that you would demonstrate in the classroom. Your communication abilities your critical thinking your ability to potentially do research.

And again this is just some more in-depth information on the letters of recommendation when you are approaching recommenders. We suggest that you ask if they have time to write you a strong letter of recommendation.
They go and give them plenty of time to complete this process as if you're playing for the DOD program don't ask people on December 10th when it was doing December 15. You know be mindful of people's time and make sure that they have time to write to a good letter recommendation that is representative of you.
Tracy Harmon
06:25:05 PM
Hello! Tracy Harmon here from Augusta, Georgia
You may also provide them with an overview of your program of interest. Perhaps you want to give them a copy of your statement of purpose. If you're you know further enough along the writing process that you feel comfortable doing that, maybe a current resume if it's not somebody who knows your full professional background well.
Zachary Lim
06:25:20 PM
@Monika Pardon Definitely! Talk about anything that demonstrates who you are as a researcher.

06:25:27 PM
Thank you @Samarth and @Ashley
And finally got it, you know think carefully and thoughtfully about who you like to serve as your recommenders before adding them to your application.
Youlim Yai
06:25:37 PM
@Washea, we will talk about GREs later. please hold your question for later
And then you want to talk to your recommenders if we're adding them to into your application because once they've been added we cannot make any changes so that means if you let somebody on there and you haven't spoken to them 1st and then you find out they don't actually have time to write you a recommendation. We can't make any changes. So, just make sure that they know it's coming in are prepared for that and are ready to go.
So potentially you might have a recommender who is a non native. English speaker and that's fine. In this case, she or he can regulate it letter in their native language.
Washea Jackson
06:26:09 PM
Thank you
They are also the responsible, then for submitting a certified literal which means a word for word translation of this letter.
And you want them to upload both documents that the original non English version and a certified translation. They'll have to upload this as 1 file.
And keep in mind for all of this that. You cannot be involved in any way in the recommendations. That means in this particular case. If somebody is a non native English speaker. They're writing an application or a recommendation letter. You cannot help them translate it and you cannot help them upload it if they need assistance from the furthest you might want to suggest if they are faculty member and have an assistant.

If there's somebody in your workplace. Maybe you can find somebody else that can give them this kind of technical assistance that they may need but again, you cannot translate the letter. You cannot upload it. Generally speaking, you cannot write any portion of it as well so keep all of that in mind.

Is it heavily advised to cite faculty you are interested in working with on your SOP for the EDLD?
Youlim Yai
06:27:17 PM
@Chuankai, no. three letters are the limit
For anybody applying to the PhD program. We recommend at least 1 letter should come from a faculty member at the school where you earned your most recent degree unless you have been out of school for more than 5 years.
Again, this is a recommendation if it is something that you do not find as possible. If you don't have those kind of ties still or potentially you've lost touch with somebody or they're just not able to write you a letter recommendation again. This isn't requirement, but again if you're able to to find a faculty member that's great.
Shiyu Jiang
06:27:48 PM
On the application page, Ed.L.D is separated from Ph.D, I am wondering if graduates of Ed.L.D are also receiving a doctoral degree.
And for the D area it is fine if all 3 letters come from professional sources again think about the program. You're applying to think about the kind of strings and the types of interest that you want the recommenders to highlight an kind of consider that when identifying recommenders.
Amita Garg
06:28:10 PM
I'm just worried if I'm at a disadvantage due to my age. I would probably apply to the PhD when I am 42.

06:28:13 PM
Good evening, everyone. Question regarding Ph.D. applicant recommendations: is it okay if the faculty member is from an undergraduate institution, in the event that you attended graduate school part-time/remotely and were able to get to know your undergraduate professors much more closely?
Paria Kermanshahi
06:28:28 PM
Can all recommenders be from the same school you graduated from? Or is it negatively considered?
Now something pretty important for the letters of recommendation is you'll see that you'll be asked whether or not. You want to waive your right to access your letter of recommendation again. This is something you want to think really carefully and thoughtfully about before you answer and make sure that you're making the right decision for you, if you do it right. This means that you will not be able to review or view. The letter submitted on your behalf, even if you were admitted and choose to enroll here at Harvard.
If you do not wait here right what will happen is your letters will become part of your student record if you were admitted in choose to enroll and in that case you will have the right to inspect the record your student record, which includes these letters.
If you are admitted and choose to enroll at Harvard. One thing I just want to point out for both of these is it kind of only comes into play. If you were admitted and choose to enroll so this doesn't mean if you do not wait right that you can see the letters. No matter what it just is kind of tells you what you can see as part of your student record here at Harvard.
Uzma Waqar
06:29:09 PM
@Amita, Is there any age limit to apply?
You are not required to waive your right to access your letters of recommendation.
In deciding whether you want to do this, or a couple of things you might want to consider again. This is an important decision because once you check yes or no. We cannot change your decision. This is something that we absolutely cannot edit on the application.

I use a preferred name with faculty in my current degree program. If the professors refer to me by my preferred name, is that a problem? My preferred name is included in the application.

You know here's something that I have to do waving my right or not.

Nina Menon
06:30:34 PM

Paria Kermanshahi
06:30:41 PM
@Youlim Is it possible to apply for a second PhD?
So that's just from my personal experience that you should wave because if you don't wave. It's like you know that you might seem like there's something that you're trying to hide did you do I don't know it OK? So I didn't hear that I've never heard right. So I'm coming from at least from the people. I do know it's generally common practice to wave so there so this is the lamb from the admissions office, so whether you wave or not wave.
You're right to view your letters how that's viewed by the committee.
Depends on the committee member so the people who evaluate your application can see whether or not. You've chosen to wave or not wave and for different committee members it holds different weight, so that's just something to know it is still up to you. The applicant to choose whether to wave or not wave. Just go you did not wave. Zachary you did wait so.

what's the least GPA expected for PHD?
Either either is fine, some facts some of committee members take that into consideration when they review letters. Others it doesn't matter to them in the other thing I would say is definitely talk to recommenders about this. Some recommenders also care and will say you know, I would feel more comfortable where I would be willing to raise your letter if you do if you're right? That's not true of all working under some don't care, some time. Either way, because it's just something to ask them before you put them down. Did you get a notification if you?

06:32:01 PM
Why do reviewers take it into consideration-- esp. if my recommenders do not care? What might it imply?

06:32:04 PM
For the PhD, does the faculty recommender need to currently work at the institution or is it ok if they have transitioned outside of the university since we've graduated?
See what they can do exactly they can see that answer to either way, OK, so sorry for that. I'm going back to the actual question. I do think that I think I saw some questions about like do they have to be in the field.
Only one of my recommenders was remotely related to education. So definitely not requirement. But what matters most is how well I think something that has been said. But how well can they speak to your ability as a researcher for at least for the PhD program? I think is the most important thing.
Yeah, I thought about 2 things.
I thought about people who were fat who are my fans like people who would be my biggest cheerleader weather, I was.
Amita Garg
06:33:12 PM

06:33:15 PM
Can one of my recommenders be from a supervisor from 2012?
In a classroom or by I don't know like it didn't really matter. The work that I was going to do. They just thought so highly of me. And they would, in a headline decided to my work and they wanted to be supportive and so that was like one of the things that I thought about it and I think that sometimes I had to make a tough decision between choosing like to be super honest choosing like my manager or choosing someone else and I went against like choosing someone who has the title versus someone who could speak very honestly and.

When a recommender is a professor in English language department, are they still supposed to write recommendations in mother tongue as well?
Kindle about me as a person and not like perceptions of me and so, um that was a tough decision that I made but you know worked worked in my favor, but just be mindful that like titled the title that a person holds should not sway you in as going to be recommender. If they do not know you will. And if there's a chance. Even if it's a very small chance that they will put something in your recommendation that will make the committee think differently about you so that was one thing and then.

The other thing I thought about Recommenders, who could speak to my experience from different points in Mycareer, so um. It's located OK. So so like I did teach for America very early in my career. So I had the EDM our region. Give me a recommendation, but I had not been in TFA for I don't know X amount of years, but she and I still maintain a good relationship and then I had someone who could speak for my current role and then I had someone who was on the receiving end of the work that I did so.
A school leader who could speak to what it was like to work with me and you know from from a product standpoint and what it was like to, I guess experience my leadership so that's how that but.

06:34:52 PM
For Ed.L.D. - the SoP and essay both talk about contributions to the American system. OK, great, so renting a good pause here just to see if there are if you have specific questions about the statement of purpose for the letters of recommendation before we move on. This can be for either using more myself for Zachary or Jessica so if you have any questions about those 2 topics. Feel free to chat them in now keeping in mind that we have more content and we're also going to time for general more general Q&A. At the end, so there are a couple of questions that people were asking about whether or not, it was appropriate to ask someone specific.

@Raymond, The systems only accommodate three letters
Whether you know, someone a supervisor from awhile ago or you know recommenders all from the same institution. So the answer to that is, you know best who amongst your community and network can best advocate on your behalf, so there is no limit in terms of from how far back or whether it's all from the same institution or company. It is up to you to decide what who?

@Christine: Is it heavily advised to cite faculty you are interested in working with on your SOP for the EDLD?
What 3 people you know who who they are an who can make the strongest case of how you would be a successful doctoral student here in a rigorous program so that you will have to choose and, yes, the question about only through Recommenders, Yes, the limit is 3. There is no option for additional recommendations for the system. I don't think that that was the case. I think that's the case for the that's the case for the DLD but not for the PhD.
Nicole Colchete
06:36:07 PM
What do you mean by addressing the fit of the program in your statement of purpose? Do we need to directly say "I think I fit well with the program because" or the committee evaluates our fit based on the content of our statement of purpose
Mary Harrison
06:36:12 PM
If you have applied to Harvard in the past, are your past application materials considered with your new materials or is each year a clean slate?
For the PhD I think there is you can write you can include up to 4. But we ask that you limit to 3, so again 3 recommendations even for the PhD so again that we are evaluating applicants fairly and equally across everyone. I think that was told him when I was when I asked. This question I was told that you can have more, but but the comedy. You can't get the committee is not guaranteed to look at that. Yes, the committee will read the 3.

06:36:54 PM
I appreciate hearing the different approaches to writing the statement of purpose.
Uh so there is a question here about getting guidance on a potential area of interest as a research topic. I assume that this is where the PhD in the statement of purpose. So the answer is no we do not give any feedback about statement of purpose or potential areas of research for the PhD application. The assumption is that students are the drivers of their own research interest. So it's not about whether or not your your research interests fits.
With the particular faculty member you should be writing it with the approach of what is your particular interest?
Maria Sujo

I am currently working in the American school system but would love to take my experience and expertise somewhere international where I see a bigger need. Is my application gonna be considered?
Let's see a question here about the educational background of the Literatur were again like, I said, We're not looking for like prestigious titles or people that I'm really impressive at your letter writers that's not something we take into consideration. We're looking for people who know you well an rate strong compelling and obviously letters that are personalized to you into your application. That's it, though I will say that for example, my think my mom knows me pretty well. I wouldn't get much because I think like titles don't matter but.

Elisa Guerra Cruz
06:38:11 PM
is the Ed L D program appropriate for an international applicant? Considering that most likely we would not end up working on the American system
Ali McAfee
06:38:11 PM
How do we balance showing our own interest and unique angle versus showing our interests overlap with professors and potential dissertation committee members?
Certain titles say something about what a person can say about you right so if you have one of the reasons why we encourage MPG applicants to have at least 1 letter from faculties because you know if you have somebody who has gone through a PhD process and who knows what research like they are in a good position to say whether or not you'd be suitable for research so you need to think not just about who knows you well, which is key very important, but also who is in the best position to evaluate your potential for success yes.
And point I think uhm it's
It is about the recommenders being able to speak to your ability to lead an lead at a system level. So not just not not on a small like not on a small scale. But what is the capacity for you as an applicant to lead lasting change in education so more of a forward looking?
Elizabeth Lindquist
06:38:56 PM
@Youlim Thanks!
Elisa Agor
06:39:02 PM
What are mainly expected from the academic referrals?
Stands I would say there are a couple of questions about length of letter. There is no requirement. Terms of how long these letters need to be going to expand a little bit of an what Zachary had mentioned so these the recommenders should not be family members. They should not be personal friends. They should be people who know you within a professional or academic context, so that might be professors supervisors.
Mentors colleagues you know, those are you know all all those would be would be potential letter writers an and.
Christine Lombardi
06:39:25 PM
@Elisa: The EdLD program is focused on the US prek-12 education system. We expect graduates to work as system-level leaders within the American system
Tree Chen
06:39:30 PM
that's why not your mother, Zachary.
Mohammed El Hamzaoui
06:39:49 PM
What if my colleague (professor) is also my spouse?
Elisa Guerra Cruz
06:39:53 PM
Thank you, @Christine Lombardi
I think if there are people who can write about particular characteristics or skills that are transferable to being exercised. A successful graduate student those might be things that they can focus on so for example, if you are a PhD applicant and you don't have any research experience that is OK. Perhaps then someone can write about the kinds of skills that would transfer over to be to be coming and being a part of a research program so that might be critical thinking skills.
Your writing skills, maybe analysis skills. Those types of things, even if it's not within a specific research setting.
Purvik Patel
06:40:12 PM
What about letters of Rec's from people at charity or volunteer organizations
Uh let's see so at this point because of time, we're going to move on to the next portions of our presentation.
Cameron Diwa
06:40:40 PM
For the PhD program, does the admission committee admit applicants who don't have formal research experience?
So I'm going to talk about transcripts and this is something that we will ask you to include with your application. So you will upload transcripts from every post secondary school that you attended and you want to be sure that your transcripts are legible. It should include information about what courses you took but crazier received and if you received a degree or diploma than the conferral date should be included with your.
Joe Wakabi
06:40:50 PM
Please talk about the GRE
Lukas Kailimang
06:41:04 PM
@Christine: what is percentage range of international students admitted for PhD in the past few years (out of the 25 students)?
Graham Lockett
06:41:08 PM
So, to be clear, the transcripts we are submitting online are technically "unofficial?"
Khadijah Haruna Iya
06:41:23 PM
would you prefer a WES transcript or the transcript from the school...
Transcript so this includes academic work. You've done over the summer. If you did. Non degree study. If you studied abroad. Make sure to include those transcripts with your application. If you are currently attending school weather at the undergraduate level or you are currently attending Graduate School. You want to include an upload a transcript that has grades through the preceding term. So if you are currently in class now fall 2019, you probably don't have grades yet.
Kori Ricketts
06:41:27 PM
i have had my transcripts sent directly to HGSE. How do I confirm the transcript was received?
Uzma Waqar
06:41:32 PM
@Christine, what if i want to work for South Asian Countries after completing this degree?
Jenny Portillo
06:41:41 PM
I may have missed this, will there be more detail given around the short essay for the EdLD program?
Fine. You want to include an uploaded transcript that includes grades through spring or summer of 2019. If you are able later on to have an updated transcript. You can upload that but it would be helpful. If we at least have a transcript. That includes the list. Of course, is that you are currently in.
Deidra Richards
06:41:58 PM
Hi, what about if the institution no longer exists. The Teacher's College I attended twenty-years ago has changed administration and those old files are no longer in existence.
Arati Nagaraj
06:41:59 PM
My Bachelors degree was completed in 1991 in another country. I do have the transcript (will dig it out of my garage) but not sure how you might verify it.
Lili Dibai
06:42:04 PM
Will these slides be available for review after the webinar?
Latifa Mousa
06:42:06 PM
@Chrisrina does the phd program focus on the prek-12 system as well?
Joy Harrigan
06:42:08 PM
I transferred schools partially through my undergrad and the transcripts from the previous schools were included on that transcript. Would it be acceptable to just send that one?
Christine Lombardi
06:42:12 PM
@Graham: We ask you to upload a copy of your transcript. We require unofficial transcripts at the time of application.
Note that there is no GPA minimum that we require in the application. We ask what is your overall GPA you can include that it does not matter? What scale your GPA is in so whether it's a four point scale 5 point scale 7 point scale 100 point scale. You can list. It exactly as it is, you do not have to do any translation OK, only when only if you are admitted and only if you decide to attend Harvard will we ask for you to send.
Deidra Richards
06:42:21 PM
Can I leave that out?
Mohammed El Hamzaoui
06:42:25 PM
What if my transcripts are from another country and there is no clear GPA?
Official copies that come directly from the institution so at this point of the application process you can upload unofficial student copies that you might have that might be screenshots from the student record if you are a current student so unofficial copies are totally fine.
Graham Lockett
06:42:37 PM
@Christine. Perfect, that's what I figured. Thanks Christine!
If you are a student who has attended universities outside of the USA have international transcripts then.
Alex Wojcik
06:43:02 PM
@Deidra, I am a TC graduate! I think you can reach out to CU directly to see if they may have copies
Raymond Zhang
06:43:04 PM
Do you need the transcript of the study aboard institution or can the transfer credits on my home institution fine?
Nunziata Monaco
06:43:10 PM
If you studied abroad, and the credits from your program transferred to your home university and the courses are listed on said transcript, do you also need to obtain a copy from the study abroad university?
Raymond Zhang
06:43:15 PM
Be fine*
All transcripts have to be translated into English if the original document is not in English so academic records must be accompanied by a certified translation. So you'll have to upload both you'll upload the original non English transcript as well as a certified literal word for word translation of your transcript only if you are admitted and you choose to attend will you be asked.
To go through transcript verification through Wes so that means at this point in the application process. You do not have to go through Wes right. You can just upload unofficial copies as well as a translation if needed.
Harmeet Kalsi
06:43:40 PM
Do we need to show any actual degrees for this section?
Danielle Gabrielli
06:43:44 PM
@christine If we do not have extensive research experience, is it still acceptable to apply for the PhD in Education?
Janice Park
06:43:51 PM
When you say unofficial copies, we can take a photo of our original and uploaded it online?
So next let's talk about standardized tests so first thing to know is that standardized tests are required of everyone. It is compulsory of everyone. No exceptions are given for prior years of work experience or previous graduate degrees earned right so this is required of everyone and there are different cutoff dates for Jerry test scores.
Derek Rinks
06:44:12 PM
Is there a way that I can verify that my GRE scores were successfully received by HGSE?
Christine Lombardi
06:44:17 PM
@Raymond: if your study abroad experience was one semester or less AND grades, course names, and credit are listed on your home institution's transcript, you do not need a separate transcript
Mary Smith
06:44:19 PM
Will we be notified when GSAS receives GRE scores?
Shira Leitson-Grabelsky
06:44:35 PM
Shira here from NM. Glad to be here. Thank you all for typing out your questions, and some answers - as a Deaf person, it helps me follow! Much appreciated.
Um or I'm sorry for standardized test scores depending on the degree, so for PhD applicant jury test scores must be from dates. No earlier than September 1, 2014 for EDLD applicants. You have the option of submitting either Jerry or gmat, regardless of the test scores must be from test states no earlier than February 1, 2015.
Raymond Zhang
06:44:47 PM
Thank you!
Ryan Braeger
06:45:02 PM
If we transferred during our undergraduate degree is it best to send a transcript from both institutions, or is the school that awarded the degrees satisfactory? The first year credits were articulated upon transfer.
Please remember that official test scores must be received by the application deadline. So you want to make sure that you are taking the exam early enough so that official test scores are received by the admission office by your application deadline. That means that you also have to use the correct school code so that means for PhD applicants more Jerry test scores.
Fae Webber
06:45:26 PM
I'm applying to the PhD program, but sent my test scores to the HGSE. What do I need to do?
Christine Lombardi
06:45:26 PM
@Shira: please let us know if you have any questions as we're going through the presentation!
Sanders Sanders
06:45:27 PM
My graduate school graded students using HP (high pass), P (pass), LP (low pass), etc. How might I be able to calculate a GPA?
Should be sent directly to GSA S and that means you need to use a school code 3451. EDLD applicants yours test scores are coming directly to us Harvard Graduate School of education are school code is 3428. If you sent your test scores to the wrong school because of the way Harvard is.
Xiaoyu Yin
06:45:47 PM
Will there be waitlists as one admission result?
Harvard is situated we cannot transfer test scores between US and GSA S4. As an example. So if you're a PhD application. You accidentally sent your official test scores to us. HTC we cannot send them to GCS you will have to resend your test scores directly to GSA S using the correct school code.
Tree Chen
06:46:03 PM
how long does it take for GRE scores to get accepted by the school?
Danielle Gabrielli
06:46:09 PM
Do the refusal letters come before the interviews are sent out?
Angela McCormick
06:46:09 PM
What are the codes?
Naa-Shorme Aidoo
06:46:18 PM
Does it take HGSE longer than the ETS 10-15 days of processing to receive the scores?
Janice Park
06:46:23 PM
what are recommended scores for GRE for Ed.LD that will be considered?
There are a lot of strategies an ways to prepare that are either free or low-cost so you know, some tips that you can prepare using free online resources. Nowadays, such as Khan Academy ETS. The company that administers the exam. They also have preparation materials free available on their website. It is up to you in terms of what works best and prepping for the Cherries.
Gloriana Agüero
06:46:27 PM
What is the GRE score required for the Ph.D.?
Christine Lombardi
06:46:34 PM
@Chuankai: it takes about 2-3 weeks for us to receive official scores
Khadijah Haruna Iya
06:46:46 PM
I just saw that only when you are admitted for wes. what if I already have my WES can I just send it? or I do have to send my raw transcript from my school?
Pauline Dott
06:46:49 PM
are we notified when the school receives the GRE scores?
Hum or the gmat, but know that number one. There is no minimum test score requirement, OK, so there aren't any cut off scores. If you go to our website. You can see the average percentiles of admitted students but that's exactly what those are those are averages so there were people who are admitted who scored above but also people who admitted who scored below so moving on.
Joy Harrigan
06:46:58 PM
I have a similar question to Ryan. I transferred during my undergraduate degree and the school I graduated from included the transcripts from the school I attended previously. Would I have to include all transcripts or just the transcript from the school I graduated from?
Niki Sochaczevski
06:46:59 PM
If we apply to the phd and send GRE scores to GSAS and want to be considered for the masters referral in a GSE masters, should we send GRE scores to GSE also?
Christine Lombardi
06:47:04 PM
@Angela: The codes are the school codes that ETS or other testing agencies need to get your official scores to us
Lukas Kailimang
06:47:04 PM
There's no minimum test score requirement, but do you have minimum writing score on the GRE for PhD?
Latifa Mousa
06:47:25 PM
If I'm doing masters in the US, do I still need to submit toefl?
Standardized test for non native English speakers, so this is required for those whose native English is not native language is not English. Excuse me and they received a bachelors degree from an institution where English was not the sole language of instruction. So this is an and statement so if you received your bachelors degree where English was the only language of instruction than you do not have to submit English language exams or if you consider yourself.
Latifa Mousa
06:48:05 PM
okay, thank you :)
Harmeet Kalsi
06:48:07 PM
If we took our GRE, and submitted it to Harvard, in general, rather than specific to a program, can it be transferred to the specific program?
Not a native English speaker. Then again, this is not applicable to you so the other thing to note is that it has to be a bachelors degree from a school where English with the sole language of instruction.
Naa-Shorme Aidoo
06:48:21 PM
Thank you Christina :)
Tree Chen
06:48:23 PM
too bad, I still have to take TOEFL...
Graduate study subsequent graduate study here, either in the US or in English language countries does not exempt individuals from either. The Toefl or the aisles, so again. Subsequent graduate study does not exempt people from the English language requirement test states can be no earlier from February 1, 2018. This is applicable to both the pH D&DEDLD and again official test scores must be received by the application deadline.
Shira Leitson-Grabelsky
06:48:32 PM
@Christina: thank you!
And again similar to the Jerry you need to use the correct school code. You can see what the school codes are this is where the tofu if you're submitting eilts and you have to require then you'll have to ask that your I'll scores be sent either to HTC if you're an EDLD applicant or to GCS if you're a PhD applicant.
Arati Nagaraj
06:48:40 PM
if it says "verified" then it means you have received the score, right?
Lit Lioa
06:48:51 PM
So I don't need a master degree to apply for a doctoral degree?
Right and we do have preferred minimum for these language exams and you can see what they are for the Toefl. We ask that they be a total score of at least 104 would individual sections of at least 26 and from the Ielts. We asked for it to be at least a 7.5 with individual sections of 7.5.
Monica Grund
06:49:09 PM
Are there preferred minimums for the EdLD?
Christine Lombardi
06:49:17 PM
@Arati @Pauline: Yes, the scores will show as "verified" on your application when we receive the official scores
If your test scores are below. These you are still welcome to apply if you wish. These are preferred minimums, so if you were score. Just below if you would like to still submit your scores and apply you are welcome to do so.
Shira Leitson-Grabelsky
06:49:22 PM
x @Christine: thank you
Pauline Dott
06:49:29 PM

06:49:31 PM
For the PhD program, does the admission committee admit applicants who don't have formal research experience?
Elizabeth Lindquist
06:49:31 PM
@Christine Thanks!
Lane Clegg
06:49:36 PM
Are there preferred minimums for the GRE?
Youlim Yai
06:49:56 PM
@Lane, no preferred minimums for GRE
Have a great, so now we're going to move on to talking about seeing this supporting materials. So this is an area of the application where you can include a sample of your work if there's something that you want to include with your application that there was not any space to do elsewhere. So you can upload a document of no more than 10 pages within the additional information section of the online application and again that is really important that no more than 10 pages. You have a longer work that you feel really passionately about that, you'd like to committee to see.
Shiyu Jiang
06:50:05 PM
Is it double spaced for the ten pages sample?
Latifa Mousa
06:50:11 PM
10 pages including references?
Alex Wojcik
06:50:22 PM
Is this supporting materials section similar/same as the digital portfolio section of the application?
Morgan Marler
06:50:24 PM
Is this for both the EDLD and PHD?
Youlim Yai
06:50:25 PM
@Latifa, yes, 10 pages total
Janice Park
06:50:25 PM
is this for Ed.LD too?
Whitley Dozier
06:50:25 PM
Is there a page limit for the resume?
You'll need to condense it down to a 10 page samples again think critically about what you want to include here and then what would be the best use of your space if you decide to use it. This is not a required part of the application. So if you're seeing this and you're thinking. I don't know what I would include here, no pressure absolutely do not need to upload anything here. I'm going to get nothing is jumping out to you. It's probably a good sign that you don't need to have anything again. All materials must be submitted as part of your online application so do not send anything to us.
Victoria Alexander
06:50:36 PM
If we are submitting a thesis that is over 10 pages, which sections do you recommend we include?
Latifa Mousa
06:50:37 PM
Thanks @Youlim :)
Hard copy don't send anything to Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Hardcopy. We can't guarantee that anything that comes in hard copy or anything emailed was not subjected application is going to get uploaded with your application.
Niki Sochaczevski
06:50:57 PM
If we apply to the phd and send GRE scores to GSAS and want to be considered for the masters referral in a GSE masters, should we send GRE scores to GSE also?
Cristina Stanojevich
06:51:03 PM
Does that include links to websites or articles included on the digital portfolio section of the application?
Youlim Yai
06:51:04 PM
@Victoria, that is up to you. There is no preference from us
Uzma Waqar
06:51:13 PM
So Toefl and GRE both are the requirement to apply if the English is Second language ?
And, which I'm really briefly about our Masters, referral option here, so if you are applying to the DOD or the PhD but you would be interested in being considered for a Masters program. If you were not accepted for the DOD are PhD. You can request to be referred to a Masters program this. I want to emphasize right off the bat only comes into play is only considered if for any reason you are not you are not admitted to the doctoral program to which you applied.
This does not negatively impact the review of your doctoral application at all.
Victoria Alexander
06:51:26 PM
Thanks Youlim!
Mary Smith
06:51:51 PM
Do most admitted applicants include supplemental materials?
So don't if you're considering it worried that if you check this box. We're going to get denied to the PhD don't or the EDM. You don't be worried about that. It isn't often process. It's not automatic so any application. You must say yes to the Masters referral option and then select one of the 13 Masters program. You have to choose one of the Masters programs. You can use more than one. You can't say I'm interested. I don't know which program. I want to be considered for at this time you do have to pick one.
Kennietha Jones
06:51:53 PM
If you already have a Ed.M from HGSE, do you still need to indicate a program?
Derek Rinks
06:52:07 PM
Would a summary of the education non-profit organization I founded be an appropriate "Supporting Materials" topic or would that fit somewhere else in the application better?
Mary Harrison
06:52:13 PM
Where can I find the average GRE scores for the Ph.D? I checked the website but am not finding that specific bit of information (I've looked before, too).
For the PhD you will then be contacted after the December 1st deadline with further instructions about how to finish that process. If you're applying for the DOD program. You will be able to complete that process any application. You'll simply be asked to upload a 500 word referral essay that will speak specifically to your interest in the Masters program again. This would just give the Masters Committee. If your application makes its way. There, some specific information about why you're interested in being considered for a Masters program.
Again, if you have to do this option. It does not impact the review of your doctor doctoral application in a negative manner.
Janice Park
06:52:34 PM
approximately how many people apply to the EDld program each year?

Kori Ricketts
06:52:54 PM
asking again: How can we confirm our official transcripts have made it to HGSE. As i haven't uploaded unofficial transcripts, but have had all official transcripts sent.
And the last point of this, I will do and emphasizes be sure that you plan ahead on how you would potentially find your Masters degree. If you were admitted to this option, so you'll know that the funding is very different for the different programs and then for the Masters. So if you do decide to do the masterful option. Make sure that your then applying for financial aid and make sure you're playing for any merit based fellowships of interest to you. Think about the whole process don't just do the 500 word essay on my way to see what happens.
Graham Lockett
06:53:03 PM
Great question, Janice!
Kennietha Jones
06:53:10 PM
If you already have an EdM from HGSE, do you still need to to indicate YES to a masters' referral?
Cameron Diwa
06:53:14 PM
@Youlim, For the PhD program, does the admission committee admit applicants who don't have formal research experience?
If you are a re applicant there, arson separate procedures of which will want to be aware. You converse will submit a maximum of 3 applications over the course of a lifetime to either school. If you're applying for a PhD in your re applicant and then that means again that you've applied to the PhD before 'cause that applications for Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Please contact the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Their admissions office directly for their instructions on the application process. 'cause it will be different.
Youlim Yai
06:53:37 PM

06:53:46 PM
@Kori, my GRE scores appeared in the application.
Mary Harrison
06:53:50 PM
Thank you! I knew I've seen it before. I was over in GSAS.
Again, you can submit a maximum of 3 applications over the course of a lifetime and you are eligible for the reapplication process. If your applications on previous to this one were for the last 3 academic years, so that's the 1718 academic year 2018, 2019 or the 2019 twenty twenty application here.
Deidra Richards
06:54:17 PM

06:54:25 PM
is it possible to review the previous ph.d reapplication procedure slide?
Youlim Yai
06:54:25 PM
@Cameron, yes, PhD candidates without any formal research experience have been admitted
The reallocation requirements are listed here, you have to create an entire new application for this year because application form. Does change from year to year. We do require that you pay, the application fee again. We ask that you upload a newer update statement of purpose again. This is a chance to address the Admissions Committee directly so I urge you to think critically and revise or written new statement of purpose.
Jas Sethi
06:54:49 PM
If you are reapplying for PhD, can the recommendations from the first application be reused?
An updated resume so we can see what you have been doing since the last time you've applied and at least 1 and newer updated letter recommendation and you can submit 3 new letters of recommendation so if there are either people that you would like to have revised letter upload a new one or different people. You would like to have right on your behalf, so great opportunity to do that and then any updated transcripts if applicable, we will keep any previously sent transcripts or if you test scores are still valid, but again if you.

Can we send letters of recommendations to the graduate school, before the submission of our final application.
Potentially, in that time since you've lost applied if your test scores have expired. Be aware of that because you would need to submit new Jerry score is if there from before that, for the DOD program. Before that February 1st, 2015 days that you learn mentioned so finally before we get to some more time for questions and the application deadline is very important for the PhD. It is Sunday. December 1st 2018 at 5:00 PM. Eastern Standard Time and again this application is available on the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences website.

06:56:32 PM
can we use the same recommendations letters on file?
The system allows you to Inter in the contact information of your recommender an once you enter in their information. Then the system will automatically send them an email with instructions on how to submit a letter of recommendation In other words, they can submit their letter recommendation before you submit your application. And remember, they have to submit their letter of recommendation by the application deadline for the PhD application.
GSA S is very strict with their deadline. They do not do not receive any late materials so remember it is December 1.

For the Ed. L.D, is a masters or certifications required?
Ariana Misdaq
06:57:14 PM
when is the Ed.L.D starts?
5:00 PM here Eastern Standard Time, so if you are not here in the USA on the East Coast. Please be sure you know what is the equivalent time for wherever you are in the world because the GCS is very strict for the EDLD application. The deadline again is December 15th. We can be a little bit flexible, but not a whole lot because we have to start reviewing applications soon.

Shira Leitson-Grabelsky
06:57:26 PM
re. @Youlim's response to @David re extension - is the response different for the Ed.L.D. program?
So if it comes a few days after the 15th usually that is OK. But there isn't a lot of leeway. Even with us because review happens very quickly after the deadline.

Graham Lockett
06:58:36 PM
@Stephanie, you unfortunately have to submit an "additional score" and pay the $27. But ultimately it's better that it's sent to the correct place, I guess.
I see another one about the recommenders as soon as you enter in somebody's contact information and save it. The email will go out to them automatically you don't have to it doesn't wait until all 3 recommenders are entered so they will go out one at a time if you enter them in.
Christine Lombardi
06:58:46 PM
@Paula: We do not expect citations for the essays. However, you if you write anything that requires a citation, be sure to include it

06:59:02 PM
Do all materials have to be uploaded before submission? Can you upload and save documents to the file before submitting?
There's a question about fee waivers so for the PhD application. If you are if you're interested in a fee waiver. Then you must contact the GSA's admission office email them, an ask about the fee waiver process for EDLD applicants. The fee waiver request form is built within the application itself. You need to go to the instructions an under the instructions there is a section called?
Monika Pardon
06:59:12 PM
For the 10 page document, may I use pictures of an adapted book I completed for a graduate course?
Application fee, and you will find the requisite form, there, so again. PhD applicants fee waiver. You need to contact CS directly for EDLD applicants. It's found within the instructions for the actual application.

What is the common educationa background of admitted students? I am from background of biology, interested in the phd program. Do I need to take certain courses to be able to apply?
A couple questions about that additional information section again that can be really anything that you think that is imperative to your application that can't be included elsewhere, but
Again, it's not required so don't. If you're not thinking of something don't feel like you need to brainstorm something right now. I don't know if either. Just go that way you use that space now I personally did and I think if the application is the same as it was during my year. I think there is a separate writing sample submission component. So I don't think that you have to worry about your writing sample fitting into that. I think there is a separate thing, but the process can change, so just follow instructions.
